Listen to Dear Dundalk (Des Wilson)
DundalkOnline The Web

They shared the love, they gave a hug.

936 students from the  Dundalk Institute ofTechnology were part of  breaking the world record for the most hugs in an hour on Tuesday in the college. The previous attempt was held by an Austrian group who left the record at 667 hugs in september of last year.

It was the first time the record was attempted in Ireland and with a great

success.

Along with the theme of  St. Valentine?s the students raised money for the

Irish Heart foundation, a representitave of which was present on the day

to watch the number of hugs given tally up.

Two local Gardai were the official judicators of the record attempt,

neither of which were idle for the hour. One Garda was in charge of the

stop watch and the other with a clicker, keeping count of the hugs.

Fabian Doran from Mullingar, also a student in the college, was the hugee.

Fabian had to ensure that each hug was a full contact hug, and had no

problem, pulling people in close. After each hug, every student had to

sign their name, then they received a stamp so as they could not hug

twice.

The entire event was entertained to the tune of a local band, The Urge.

Overall a great day was had by all and now all that waits is the

anticipation of the Guinness Book of Records 2009.

We at Most Hugs would like to thank all of the students and staff at Dkit,

all the local businesses and everyone who shared the love for their

support.
