15 World Titles for Cobra-Kan

On Friday last Cobra-Kan kickboxing club travelled to Castlebar in Mayo to participate in the womma world championships.

 

They had a strong team of 25 students all in fighting form with great hopes of snatching a world title.

 

On Saturday was the light contact in which we had 7 students take part and we had 3 students taking part in the traditional forms. 

 

First up in the light contact was Andréa Ladley. This was the first time she competed in this discipline and she went out with great confidence. She had her work cut out for herself in the semi finals up against the reigning welsh champion but she done herself proud to take a well deserved bronze medal.

 

Daniel Begley and Niall Dawe both in the same section fought exceptionally well both making it to meet each other in the final.  Daniel took the world title with Niall taking silver.

 

Up next was Conal Cooney.  His talent shone through making it to his final and going on to take the world title.

 

Dara Lawless was up against some strong competitors but he took a well earned silver medal.

On to take the world title.

 

Catherine Doyle was last up on the day and she competed well making it to the semi finals where she took the bronze medal.

 

Up first in the traditional forms was Glen Ladely who took a bronze medal.

 

Andrea Ladley and Caitlin king took part in their sections but where unlucky to take a medal.

On Sunday was the turn of the points sections where all 26 students where competing.

 

First up was Amy Lally and Stephine Hernan both in same section. Amy came out of her age group once again to compete at a higher level. Both students made it as far as the quarterfinals but unfortunately where narrowly beaten out of the medals.

 

Dara Lawless and Philip Corway both in the same section fought exceptionally well. Both made it to the semi finals where Philip took a well earned bronze medal with Dara going on to take he title in excellent style.

 

Lorna King and Niamh Higgins where up next in the senior section. Both making it to their semi finals where Lorna had a convincing win making it to her final.  Niamh had her work cut out for herself giving away over a foot in height and a great weight difference but that didn’t faze her as she took the lead in the first round going on to extend the lead convincingly in the final round winning the semi's making it to the final to meet Lorna. Both girls showed why they are world holder material showing great expertise with Niamh taking the title and Lorna taking silver.

 

Daniel Begley and Niall Dawe both in the same section both made it to their final to met each other. Daniel took the title in superb style and Niall took silver.

 

Glen Ladely who is starting to shine took the title in his section winning in great style.

 

Catherine Brady made it to her semi final where she met Mexico.  She beat the Mexican making it to her final where she took a silver medal.

 

Catherine Doyle took the title in her section with a convincing win.

 

Kieran McArdle made it to his semi final and took away with him a well-deserved bronze medal.

 

Malcom Ladley who participated in the veterans heavy weight made it to his final where he was up against Mexico. After two rounds the fight had to go to extra time with Malcom taking the title in a close contest.

 

Bernard Duffy (coach) made it to his semi final where he met the Northern Ireland champion. He won the semi final taking him into the final where he took away with him a silver medal.

 

Christn Drumm took part in the senior section and made it to her semi final and took her bronze medal.

 

Conor Heran and Conal Cooney both in the same section put in an exciting performance both making it to their semi finals with Conor taking a very well deserved bronze medal and Conal went on to take the title in exceptional style.

Ursula Christodoulides , Jade Christodoulides  and Amy McEneaney where all in the same section. All 3 made it to the quarter finals with Amy and Jade just missing out on the medals. Ursula went on to the final where she took the title showing her talent.

 

Andrea Ladley, Laura Begley, Kerry Watts and Catlin King all in the same section.  They all moved up to this section for the experience. They all made it through to their quarter finals where Andrea and Catlin narrowly missed out on the medals. Laura took home a well earned bronze medal with Kerry making it to the final and took a well earned silver medal.

 

Malcom Ladley junior stepped up to the mat in his first competition at the young age of 5. He competed with great strength and confidence just being pipped at the post to make it to the next round.

 

Patricia McQuillan and Bernard Duffy are so proud of their students. They are delighted that their hard work is paying of for them and that they are giving their students the opportunity to put world titles under their belts. This is such a great achievement for the club and their students to take home so many world titles in a contact sport. The club is going from strength to strength its great to see them doing so well.
